ABSTRACT
Private annuities as an estate planning tool and a tax savings device appear relatively simple and attractive. However, in many cases the simplicity is a deception. What appears appropriate at first glance may be very complex and disadvantageous to the estate client.

Proper understanding of the pitfalls of the private annuity and, a related concept, the installment sales contract are essential loan estate planner. To be sure some cases are very well served by either a private annuity or an installment sales. This article explains the positive and negative characteristics of the private annuity and the installment sale. It also discusses the way in which life insurance may be used in both devices.
